USDA Deregulates Dicamba-Tolerant Cotton and Soybean Section: News from Around the World The U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA) Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) has announced its decision to deregulate Monsanto's Dicamba-tolerant trait technologies –Roundup Ready 2 Xtend™ soybeans and Bollgard II® XtendFlex™ cotton. The decision will be published in the Federal Register in the near future. Robb Fraley, Monsanto's chief technology officer, said "This announcement marks an important milestone for farmers around the world. GM Rice Reduces Pesticide Use and Improves Farmer Health in China, Study Section: News from Around the World Through the analysis of the data collected from the physical examination of Chinese farmers, a study shows that GM rice significantly decreases pesticide use and adverse effects on farmers' neurological, hematological, and electrolyte system. The study is published in Science China Life Sciences journal. General health and blood examinations of 109 farmers in Fujian province were conducted in 2010. Historical records of the visible effects of pesticide applications were obtained from each farmer. They were also asked specific questions regarding the effects of pesticide use on their health. Results showed that commercialization of GM rice may reduce pesticide use by more than 2/3. This equals a pesticide reduction of more than 196,000 tons in China per year. The authors indicated that about 8% of rice farmers still suffer from acute pesticide-related poisoning. Thus, the estimated 16 million farmers who suffer acute poisoning illnesses each year can benefit from the use of GM technology and the consequent reduction in pesticide exposure. Hence, the commercialization of GM rice is expected to improve the health of farmers in developing countries, where pesticide application is necessary to mitigate crop loss. Global Agri-biotech Market Hits US$27.8B in 2014 Section: News from Around the World The global agri-biotech market sustains growth reaching US$27.8 billion by the end of 2014, according to the report released by BCC Research, a market research company based in the U.S. The global market for agri-biotech was US$26.4 in 2013. With the projected compound annual rate of 11 percent over the next five years, it is expected that the global market for agri-biotech might reach US$46.8 billion by 2019. "North America and South America are the leading geographic markets for agricultural biotechnology products," the report said. "South America and Asia are projected to post high growth rates in their markets due to favorable regulatory climate and new transgenic crops," the report added. It was also stated in the report that biotechnology tools, such as DNA sequencing, biochips, RNA interference, synthetic biology and genomic editing tools "comprise a small but high growth segment of the industry." European Parliament Approves New Law on Planting GM Crops Section: News from Around the World Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) have passed a new law that will allow EU member states to restrict or ban the cultivation of genetically modified (GM) crops on their own territory, even if this is allowed at EU level. The legislation, originally tabled in 2010, but was then deadlocked for four years due to disagreement between pro- and anti-GMO member states, was informally agreed by Parliament and Council in December, and will come into force in spring of 2015. Belgian MEP Frédérique Ries, who is steering the legislation through Parliament said, "This agreement will ensure more flexibility for member states who wish to restrict the cultivation of the GMOs in their territory. It will, moreover, signpost a debate which is far from over between pro- and anti-GMO positions."  MON810 maize is currently the only GM crop cultivated in the EU. UK Govt Adviser Calls for Use of Agri Technologies that "Produce More with Less" Section: News from Around the World Professor Lord Krebs, Principal of Jesus College, told the Oxform Farming Conference that organic farming does not necessarily equate to environmentally friendly farming. He explained that organic farming is generally less productive per hectare meaning more land is needed to produce a certain amount of food. "Converting land to agriculture, especially arable farming, results in the release of large amounts of carbon, so from the point of view of reducing greenhouse gases, organic farming might actually be a worse option than conventional farming," he added. Thus, he suggested that other forms of agriculture could also be harnessed to mitigate the effects of climate change. "Some evidence suggests that genetically modified, herbicide tolerant crops, facilitate minimum tillage agriculture, a further reason for encouraging their acceptance by the food industry," he said. "But if we look at the big picture, there's no doubt that we are going to need all the appliance of science that we can muster, if agriculture is to rise to the challenge of feeding the world in a changing climate with diminishing resources. In short, we are going to have to produce more with less," he stressed. "There is a lot of negative public perception about Bt crops… Even a paper in Nature says linking these two (biotech cotton and farmer suicides) is our imagination," said Dr. Anupam Verma, Indian National Science Academy Senior Scientist at the Indian Agriculture Research Institute, during his talk on GM crops. Biotech critics point out that the increasing number of suicides in Maharashtra is due to the inability of Bt cotton farmers to pay their debts. However, the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) report said that there were several causes of suicide, and Bt cotton is not a major factor. Dr. Verma also refuted arguments about monopolization and Bt cotton. He said that there are more than 1,000 Bt cotton hybrids available in the country. He also mentioned Project Sunshine in Gujarat, and explained how Bt cotton influences the growth in agriculture in Gujarat. Dr. Deepak Pental, former Vice-Chancellor of the Delhi University also voiced out his support to biotechnology. "We can produce oil indigenously if we use Bt. But unfortunately, it is caught up in a debate taken up by the left and now supported by the neo-right." Dr. Pental is a renowned genetic scientist with major breakthroughs in hybrid seed science.
