 Biotechnology will not just address malnutrition, but it will also help increase food production
and food security, says Dr. Florence Wambugu, CEO of Africa Harvest
Biotech Foundation International. Dr. Wambugu mentioned the statement
during the stakeholder's forum and launch of ISAAA Brief 46: Global
Status of Commercialized Biotech/GM Crops 2013 which was held in Accra,
Ghana on August 5, 2014. The population of Africa is projected to increase significantly in the coming years, thus there is a need for a massive increase in food production, Dr. Wambugu stressed. There must be a high level of political will to successfully adopt and reap the benefits of biotechnology in the region, she added. On the other hand, Prof. Walter Alhassan, agricultural biotechnologist and Biosafety Policy Consultant at the Forum For Agriculture Research in Africa (FARA), said that he observed that the public's fear on the technology is a result of misinformation. Thus, he encouraged publications on agri-biotech, which will help the public get the right information on biotech, and eventually help in the development of agri-biotech in the region. experts Naglaa Abdallah, Vivian Moses, and CS Prakash presented how
biotech applications can improve plant's tolerance to abiotic stresses
brought about by climate change.
According to the article, developing countries, particularly those in
South Asia and sub-Saharan Africa may face the gravest consequences of climate change in food production. Genetic transformation and the resulting GM crops
are increasingly adopted around the world, and thus the technology
holds promise in addressing climate change problems in agriculture. response to the request of the European Commission, the European Food
Safety Authority (EFSA) assessed the documents forwarded by France in
support of its request to ban the planting of GM maize MON810 in the EU.
According to EFSA, the scientific publications and the arguments
forwarded by France do not provide any new information that would change
the previous risk assessment conclusions and risk management
recommendations released by the EFSA GMO Panel. EFSA considers that the
