United
Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (UN-FAO) Director General
José Graziano da Silva is urging support for science-based options to
attain global food security. Speaking at the opening of the 24th session
of the Committee on Agriculture (COAG) in Rome, da Silva called for a
'paradigm shift' in global attitudes on agriculture,
adding that only by decreasing the amounts of agricultural inputs, such
as water and chemicals, could the sector move towards a more
sustainable and productive long-term path.
He said that options including agro-ecology, climate-smart agriculture, biotechnology and the use of genetically modified organisms, would help meet the expected demand from an anticipated world population of nine billion by 2050. According to da Silva, the previous input-intensive model cannot be used anymore as the solutions of the past have shown their limits. "We need to explore these alternatives using an inclusive approach based on science and evidence, not on ideologies," he added. A
scientific review article titled "Prevalence and Impacts of Genetically
Engineered Feedstuffs on Livestock Population" shows the impact of GM crops
as a feed component for animals. This review study is led by Alison Van
Eennaam and Amy Young, animal scientists from the University of
California, Davis. The article summarizes the influence of GM crops used
as a feed component
in the performance and health of animals consuming it from its first
introduction in year 1996 up to 2013. Their study also involved
examining the livestock feeding studies over 30 years and encompasses
about 100 billion animals.
Their findings show that GM feeds did not affect the health and productivity of livestock animals. The products of animals fed with GM feeds showed the same nutritional component as the products of animals fed with non-GM feeds. Read more this article at: http://news.ucdavis.edu/ |

University of Adelaide research scientist Matthew Tucker is changing the developmental path of grain in cereal crops
to better influence yield and quality. Tucker will be taking advantage
of plant cells' ability to change identity as the plant develops, to
determine how to create cereal grains that are healthier to eat and
produces more yield.
Tucker said, "I'm trying to identify the pathways that drive cells to become different. We'll be looking to identify natural variants in these pathways that can be used to purposely change cell types in the developing cereal grain." A potential outcome of Tucker's work could be increased antioxidant levels in wholegrain or wholemeal flour. He added that there is tremendous potential to bring the healthy compound-making ability to cereals, which would also help develop a sustainable way of growing healthier foods.
