Intelligence Squared (iq2) Debates hosted a livestreamed debate on Fora.tv about genetically modified food. World Food Prize 2013 laureate Robert Fraley and University of California, Davis scientist Alison Van Eenennaam argued that planting of GM foods should be allowed. On the other hand, Margaret Mellon, formerly of the Union of Concerned Scientists, and Charles Benbrook of Washington State University argued the negative. The argument of the biotech scientists won by huge margin shift in the audience, which changed from 32% to 60% in favor of GM foods. Watch the video at http://fora.tv/2014/12/03/ |

India's environment minister Mr. Prakash Javadekar said that there is no scientific evidence that genetically modified (GM) crops
are bad for health or environment. In a written response in the Rajya
Sabha, the upper house of the Parliament of India, over the queries of
the recent decision of GEAC granting approval to field trials, the
minister quoted, "GM crops have beneficial traits such as insect resistance and herbicide tolerance, stress tolerance, fungal resistance, disease resistance, salt tolerance, drought tolerance, enhanced yield and nutrition that may help in food security." The minister said that GM crops particularly GM corn, canola, soybean, and cotton
are being cultivated and consumed by humans as well as animals in many
countries of the world as food, feed and processed products.
"There is no scientific evidence to prove that GM crops would harm soil, human health and environment," he said. "In view of various concerns related to the safety, efficacy and agronomic performance of transgenic seeds, extensive evaluation and regulatory approval process takes place before any GM plant is approved for commercial cultivation," he added. He informed that the Genetic Engineering Appraisal Committee (GEAC) recently approved 12 GM crops - cotton, rice, castor, wheat, maize, groundnut, potato, sorghum, brinjal, mustard, sugarcane, and chickpea - for experimental field trials for the purpose of generating biosafety data. Section: Research Highlights
Arsenic
is a carcinogenic element which makes it dangerous for human health.
Plants accumulate this element due to its presence in soil and water.
Naturally, plants have the ability to control the level of the
accumulated arsenic by converting arsenate to arsenite through chemical
reduction occurring in the roots. The arsenite is then transported to
the shoot through phosphate transport system. This conversion provides
the key for the detoxification process of arsenic. A group of
international scientists from University of Aberdeen, Chinese Academy of
Sciences, Nanjing Agricultural University, and Rothamsted Research
studied this process to find the gene responsible for it.
By the use of genome-wide association mapping in Arabidopsis thaliana, they were able to reveal the gene needed for the conversion process. The scientists named High Arsenic Content 1 (HAC1) as the gene mainly responsible in the chemical reduction process. This gene encodes the enzyme, arsenate reductase, that converts arsenate to arsenite. Removal of this gene in plant causes an increased concentration and accumulated of arsenic levels in the shoots. This further testify the importance of this gene in the conversion process. Identification of this gene is necessary in breeding new varieties of crop with less arsenic accumulation. Read more at http://www.plosbiology.org/ |

As the country is gearing up towards possible commercialization of biotech crops,
a workshop on "Farmers at the forefront in applying genetically
modified crops in Vietnam" was held on December 3, 2014 at the
Headquarters of Vietnam Farmer's Union at Rural Today
newspaper, Hanoi. Close to 100 research scientists and experts in
Vietnam, representatives from different local businesses and
industries, and Farmer's Union of provinces and cities, as well as maize growers in the country participated.
Dr. Nguyen Duy Luong, deputy chairman of the Central Vietnam Farmer's Association, in his opening remarks expressed his hope that Farmers Union at different levels would get more information about GM crops and its benefits in preparation for the official commercialization of biotech crops in the country. Journalist Luu Quang Dinh, chief editor of Rural Today newspaper, opined that it is high time that correct and science-based information on biotech crops be known and circulated in the light of the many unfounded issues on the technology. Asian Farmers Network regional chair Mr. Edwin Paraluman and Philippine chair Mr. Reynaldo Cabanao shared their personal experiences on the production and consumption of biotech corn in the Philippines, as well as its contribution to the corn and livestock industry. For more information on this workshop, contact Lê Đức Linh of AgBiotechVN at ldlinh@gmail.com. |
